This time, I'll talk about the differences between exchange study abroad and privately funded study abroad. Do you know what difference between these two? I knew about them at a study abroad information session held at my school.
The biggest difference is the cost. It depnends on the place, but usually privately funded study abroad costs about 2~3 times as much as exchange study abroad. You may think that it is impossible to study abroad at your own exepense, but of course there are some advantages. You can choose the place that you wanna go. You can choose country, state, and school by yourself. I'm sure that you want to study abroad by privately funded when you know the fact. I felt the same way.
However, from the parents, the cost is really important thing and my parents cooperate on the condition that I go to study abroad as an exchange student. Another characteristic of privately funded atudy abroad is that the selection citeiria ia lower. You don't need high grades and high English skills. Therefore anyone can try this type of study abroad even people don't get good grades at junor high or high school.
I went to study abroad as an exchange student so I don't have so much information about privately funded study abroad, but these were are the some information.
I'll introduce about exchange studying abroad. As I told you before the cost is half of the privately funded study abroad. But it is still not so cheap.
The biggest feature of exchange study abroad is that you can not choose a place. Of course you can pick country! but that's it. You can't choose states or school yourself. Also, most of the students are sent to the countryside. I don't know why but I went to Oklahoma and some of my friends went to Texas, Kansas, Utah. My lucky friend went to Florida, but she said she didn't go to the Disney World.
The another thing is that many students have no time to prepare after the place is decided. When I got the email from my agent, it waw three days before the day of departure. I thought it was only Japan, but it was not. One of my friend form Brazil said he got the e-mail about place and school the day before his departure. He didn't know where to go and whee can he leave. Therefore, if you go to study abroad on Summer, you should start packing form July or early August.
Finally, this may not be well known, the original purpose of exchange studyin abroad is Culture Exchange. In general, I think many Japanese students who go to study abroad is because they want to learn English, and there also many exchange students form all over the world who have same purpouse or goal. However, the countries for example Japan and America are exchanging same number of students. And they want students to exchnage their cultures not students' own language skill. That means they want to pick students who already know English. So that the level is higher than studying abroad at private expense. However, here is a fuct that we all can challenge and some students who can not speak English at all are selected as an exchafe students. Don't be afraid and challenge!
The first thing that you always need to do is talk to your parents. Especially about money. I know it is expensive but there are many ways to go studying abroad.
By the way, I finally desided to go to the japanese university, but I always wish I could return the U.S. someday.
